Wedding 101: DJ or a Band; which should you chose?

When it comes to planning the wedding, you've spent hours trying on dresses, picking attire for the wedding party, looking at flower arrangements and sampling dozens of different foods. You may serve your guests a world-class dinner, but what can really make or break your big day is the entertainment that follows the meal.

Picking a band or a DJ is often one of the great decisions that is part of the wedding planning process, and it can't be overlooked as it sets the tone for what kind of reception you are going to have.

Keep your playlist in mind when as you go into the process. A DJ can likely play whatever you want them too - odds are they have a full library on a laptop that they can tie into the venue's sound system. Depending on your musical taste, a band may not be able to pull off the sound you're looking for, so keep that in mind as you go into the process.

If you have a preference for live music, a band is the direction to go. Even if they are playing other bands' music, a band can bring a whole different energy to the party. Once you've made that decision, listen to several different bands before booking so you can see what they are most comfortable - and uncomfortable - playing. A hopping party can grind to a halt when a band starts playing a genre not in their wheelhouse. Also, talk to friends and see what they went with for their reception.

If either a band or DJ isn't in the budget for you, there is a third option that is becoming popular: Let the wedding guests run the music. If you have iTunes on your Mac or PC laptop, make several different playlists - for music during dinner, more upbeat dances and slower dances, for example - and let them run. If the reception needs a quick change of pace, change the playlist and you're ready to go.
